Abstract
This study estimates the economic contributions of the greenhouse and nursery industry, commonly known as the "green industry," in Tennessee for 2023. Utilizing data on employment, labor income, value added, and industry output, alongside economic multipliers generated from the Input-Output modeling software, IMPLAN (Impact Analysis for Planning), we provide a comprehensive analysis of the green industry's impact on the state's agricultural economy. The findings are presented in 2025 dollars, highlighting the industry's significance for informing future policy decisions. The primary objectives were to assess total contributions at the state, regional, and county levels. Direct employment across all sectors was estimated at 47,098 full-time and part-time jobs, yielding approximately $7.47 billion in output, $4.41 billion in value added to Tennessee’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and $2.63 billion in labor income. Including indirect and induced effects, total industry contributions reached around 69,391 jobs, $12.07 billion in output, $7.08 billion in value added, and $4.21 billion in labor income. The landscape and horticultural services sector emerged as the largest contributor, with 32,828 jobs and $2.85 billion in GDP contributions. Following this, the architectural, engineering, and related services sector provided 11,606 jobs and $2.29 billion in value added. Among the three regions, Middle Tennessee exhibited the highest employment and GDP contributions, followed by East and West Tennessee. Notably, contributions from the green industry in Tennessee have more than doubled since 2018, underscoring its vital role in the state’s economy.
