Urban Youth Agricultural Literacy Impacts of an Educational Experience with the Tennessee State University Mobile Agriculture Classroom and Lab
Abstract
Agriculture is an important part of any successful society. Lack of agriculture education has greatly reduced agriculture literacy among urban populations. Agriculture is so vital, that everyone in American society should understand the fundamentals of agriculture. In order to accomplish that goal, this research looks at starting with educating youth. The Tennessee State University’s (TSU) mobile classroom could be a way to make agriculture education more accessible. This study examined the direct impact that the Tennessee State University mobile classroom experience had on youth perceptions and knowledge of agriculture. Youth perceptions and knowledge were examined using a pre-test and post-test instrument administered to 70 middle school students who participated in the TSU mobile classroom experience. The TSU mobile classroom experience included informative videos, music, and hands-on learning with a focus on the relationship between agriculture and animals. The questions covered the agricultural material that the participants were exposed to at the TSU mobile classroom. From this study, it was concluded that the Tennessee State University had a positive increase on the knowledge on the relationship between agriculture and animals. Students gained an understanding of the relationship between agriculture and animals and almost all of the students were impacted, in a positive manner, after their exposure to TSU mobile classroom, and Tennessee State University. The study concluded that the need continues for accessible agriculture education is needed for youth to become agriculturally literate.
