Developing a curriculum plan for a middle school all-star pop ensemble

Kerry Frazier, Tennessee State University

Abstract

This curriculum plan was developed to educate middle school music students on the progression of popular music and the positive effect it has on the student's overall success in the learning environment. The plan provides a basic yet creative pedagogy that will guide the students in achieving the objectives of the nine national standards. This ten-week curriculum plan was implemented during the summer of 2011 at a band camp in Nashville, TN entitled, The Music City All-Star Performance Band. This research shows that educating through popular music affords a great opportunity for students to have an enjoyable, as well as, educational music experience that is relevant and intentional.
